Local grandparents:

1. Go to the kids' school on occasion for lunch, a school play, Field Day, etc. Be involved.
2. Pick up the kids after school on occasion for an outing to the library or the park.
3. Be a part of family dinners. Sundays are always good and it's a nice way to connect as a family before Monday rolls around again.
4. Have your grandchildren help you garden, whether it's their own designated spot in the yard or some pots on the deck.

Long distance grands:
1. Call the kids, either on the phone or using webcam (inexpensive). Email the older ones. Mail them cards and notes.
2. Call at bedtime to read them a story. If that won't work, record yourself reading some books so that the kids can listen to your voice.

In general:
Grandparents are not all about spoiling and lots of gifts. Be real. Keep to the kids' schedules and don't mess them up when you visit. If your daughter and son-in-law (or however the relationship works) request that the children not be given suckers, donuts, etc., please honor that and don't sneak them to the kids when the parents aren't around. Respect the parents' right to parent their own way, even if it is not the way you did it.

I love this idea! I have been wanting my parents to write down some special memories (of their childhood, my childhood, their parents, etc) so that my children and grandchildren have something written by them.
